What is the T'boli Scholarship all about?

Islam came to the Philippines with traders during the 15th Century from Malaysia, and first took root in the islands of the Sulu archipelago before spreading to the main island of the South, Mindanao. Many of the tribes throughout the Philippines willingly accepted Islam. The T'boli, B'laan and Ubo tribes of Mindanao, however, continued to practice animism in the interior of Mindanao Island.

The first batch of 14 T'Boli Scholarships were offered to a group of students between 1993 - 1997. The second batch of 10 scholarships were offered in 2001 - 2005, and the fruits of this progamme has resulted in the need to continue this scholarship initiative, for the benefit of the increased number of converts and potential students who are seeking financial assistance for higher education in the field Islamic education.

How is the T'boli Scholarship Fund managed?

The T'boli Scholarship Fund would perform the role of guardian to the selected students for the duration of the Degree. The cost of each student amounting to US$ 1000.00 per annum for a period of 4 years would be supported by donors through Zakat and Sadaqa.

The filtering of applications, and the decision to award the chosen applicants, is performed by Dr. Bilal Philips, with the details of the candidates being made available to the desired sponsor(s). The T'boli Scholarship Fund management team would also provide regular student performance reports and final statements to the sponsor over the 4 year period of their education.

The Scholarship Fund which is a non-profit scholarship funded and managed purely for the benefit of Muslim education, would be managed by a qualified team of accountants, with an annual report to be published online for reference.

How will the T'boli Scholarship Fund accomplish its goals?

The T'boli Scholarship Fund aims to increase students' higher education enrollment, producing graduates to set out on Islamic career paths, and provide services to a lesser fortunate community in the Philippines. Funding sources will be derived from private and corporate donations, and individuals who are able to make a commitment to sponsorship.

Insha Allah, with the support of individuals or corporations, we hope that the Scholarships will continue to run successfully.
